Review: Crosseyed, Crosseyed Cat

For a band that romps through rock grooves, Latin , spaghetti western, ragtime, and even a waltz (Skeleton's Waltz), Crosseyed is a good name. Looking at the world through crosseyed glasses distorts the view, but it's an interesting outlook for taking snapshots. They were just signed to Coyote's Autonymous Records. They show an eclectic range of orange and brown rock sepias. This is a fall night CD. This is not a sunshine and daytime band, but it is original, and kinda psychotic group.

The lead guitarist has a special surf/jazz/rockabilly inkling that is upbeat and unpretentious, and whoever though of adding cello to some of the darker ditties might have really saved the day. Crosseyed's off-beat songwriting, in using tried and true rock grooves transforms into something scarier, and more immediate. Like how a pitcher of sangria can turn a common roadhouse into a carnival. Like how skewed Jamaican versions of Motown songs can get twisted into reggae.

Not that Crosseyed is likely to do reggae, but if they did, it would come from cock-eyed Yakima simpatico with the rastafarian hillbilly spirit, as if Frank Zappa joined Stray Cats and deliberately moved the whole show to Washington State, where they would be sure to be misunderstood. But I get it. I look forward to another release on their new label, and I give it 3 apples.
